Background of the Study

Whistleblowing is a critical mechanism for exposing corporate fraud and promoting accountability in organizations. By reporting unethical practices, whistleblowers play a vital role in maintaining corporate integrity and safeguarding stakeholder interests (Adewuyi & Bello, 2023).

In Yobe State, corporate fraud remains a persistent issue due to weak governance structures, inadequate protections for whistleblowers, and a culture of silence. The absence of robust reporting frameworks further exacerbates these challenges, leading to financial losses and diminished public trust (Ahmed & Musa, 2024).

Statement of the Problem

Corporate fraud in Yobe State often goes undetected due to fear of retaliation against whistleblowers and limited implementation of whistleblower protection laws. Although the Nigerian Whistleblower Protection Act provides a legal framework, its enforcement is inconsistent, reducing its effectiveness in addressing corporate fraud (Okoro & Yusuf, 2023).

This study examines the role of whistleblowers in exposing corporate fraud and explores ways to strengthen whistleblowing mechanisms in Yobe State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of whistleblowers in exposing corporate fraud in Yobe State.

  2. To identify challenges faced by whistleblowers in the region.

  3. To recommend strategies for enhancing whistleblowing mechanisms.

Research Questions

  1. What is the role of whistleblowers in exposing corporate fraud in Yobe State?

  2. What challenges do whistleblowers face in the region?

  3. What strategies can enhance whistleblowing mechanisms?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Whistleblowers do not significantly expose corporate fraud in Yobe State.

  2. Challenges faced by whistleblowers do not significantly affect their effectiveness.

  3. Strategies for enhancing whistleblowing mechanisms do not significantly improve their impact.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on whistleblowing practices in Yobe State, particularly in the context of corporate fraud from 2015 to 2025. Limitations include potential underreporting of whistleblowing incidents and limited access to whistleblower testimonies.

Definitions of Terms

  • Whistleblowers: Individuals who report unethical or illegal activities within an organization.

  • Corporate Fraud: Deliberate actions by an organization to mislead stakeholders for financial gain.

  • Yobe State: A northeastern region of Nigeria, serving as the study location.
